Sometimes you need to bring reinforcements when you tackle a big job, like cleaning out the closet.
I’ve found cleaning out excess clothes from my very full closet is so much easier if I bring God with me. He offers great feedback, is honest and kind, has a great sense of humor, and is always right.
I glanced at a floral cardigan. Before I could grab it, He said “it’s an unattractive bathrobe”. I laughed so loud I had to explain to my husband in the next room what God had just said to me. He was right. I wore it maybe twice over the past several years. Into the donate pile it went.
Sometimes I’d try things on after He gently said “donate”. I’d try and show Him how great something was, just to sigh, and toss the piece to donate.
I tried to argue that the cardigan with the big buttons made me look smarter. We laughed so much, and He was right again.
I held up a floral lace cardigan. He said “you can have 1,000 flowers, but please don’t ever wear that!” I almost started crying, I was laughing so bad. I am not even going to try it on to convince Him. The tone alone set me straight! Into the pile it goes.
Picking up another one, He said “you’re too young and vibrant to wear that. Please“. I inspected it. It didn’t look THAT bad. “I’m trying it on”, I told Him. He repeated please. “You didn’t say no”, I replied, walking to the bathroom mirror. “Do you want me to get specific”? He asked.
Looking at my reflection, I had a loss for words. It. Was. Awful! Yup – God wins.
Then I found a sweater I’d completely forgotten about in the jumbled, overfull mess of my closet. I tried it on and then heard His soft voice.
“You’re too beautiful for that sweater”. I raised my eyebrow at His response. “It’s too big” He continued, “the dropped sleeve is strange, it’s too wide, it’s pilling, the color isn’t bad… but you’re too beautiful for that sweater”.
I’ve never had someone tell me my sweater looked so bad in such a loving way. I love Him so much and LOVE spending time with Him. I’ve never been happier to donate something.
Next time you need to go through your closet to donate extra items, invite Christ in with you. Trust me. You’ll never try to get rid of things without Him ever again! He honestly makes it fun, easy and the bonus is getting some quality time in with God.
If you’ve had your own experiences working with Him while cleaning/organizing your home, I’d love to hear all about it! Leave your stories in the comments below.
